Having been with Stone Junction for over a year now, some of you may notice that I still keep my editor’s hat in my wardrobe. This means that I am on the receiving end of press releases and emails myself. As a result, I am continually learning how not to do things, as well as how to do them properly.
I have now stumbled across an amusing post: 8 more terms to axe from press releases. This includes well-worn and clichéd phrases like ‘Pleased/proud/thrilled/excited to announce’ and ‘When asked for his/her input’, as well as ‘Best-in-class/Best-of-breed’ and ‘Wealth of experience’.
It may sound elementary but I am constantly amazed how often these phrases still come up. Quite often it is because the client puts them there and supplicant PR ‘professionals’ think nothing of leaving them in, sometimes knowing full well that these phrases will be struck out by any editor worth his salt.
The truth is that editors are stakeholders in PR firms, though not their paymasters like clients are, and most seasoned PR professionals will know that. Therefore, they will advise clients accordingly and not take the easy way out by leaving in things like trademark symbols and upper-case ‘shouts’.
Some clients may still insist on doing things their way, it is their company letterhead after all, but at least they will know that they risk being counter-productive. Most clients will concede that they pay for advice from PR professionals like us to project the best image for them to editors.

Appointment at The Grocer
The Grocer has appointed Daniel Lanyon as reporter. Lanyon is a recent investigative journalism graduate whose previous experience includes The Times and BBC World Service . He was also economics correspondent for Hurriyet Daily News in Istanbul, Turkey.
Editorial changes at PrintWeek
Pamela Mardle has left her position as senior reporter at Haymarket Media Group's PrintWeek. She is now freelance and available for both PR and journalism opportunities.
Editorial changes at PME (Pharmaceutical Market Europe)
PM Group has promoted Dominic Tyer from managing editor to editorial director of PME (Pharmaceutical Market Europe), replacing Clare Bates who has now moved to the role of commercial director.
