Last week mentioned that I would be devoting these Wednesday columns to YouTube optimisation as part of an industrial PR campaign because I see YouTube as the great ‘forgotten’ social media. Hardly anyone treats it as a contact building platform in the same way we do Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, but one of the best ways to get the most out of it is to do just that.

The first thing to do with social media is to use it to be social on! This means making contact with your existing friends, customers and suppliers and linking your account to theirs as a ‘friend’ or ‘subscriber’. Once you’ve done this, you can start to actually communicate with them.

However, this isn’t as easy on YouTube as it is on other social networks; because you can’t simply import your contacts from elsewhere. However, what you can do is link your Google Mail, Facebook, Yahoo and Hotmail accounts. When you’ve done this you can see if any of your existing contacts have YouTube accounts linked to the e-mail address (or Facebook account) you have recorded for them. It’s surprisingly easy to do as well, once you know where to look. And the place to look isn’t in your ‘Account’ section!

It’s on your YouTube homepage, on the very bottom right hand side. Yep, this is where YouTube hides away one of its most useful features. Using the function is very simple as well, you just click on the icon of the account you want to attach and it guides you through the process of linking and then searching for contacts. So, now you know where the utility is, there’s nothing stopping you. Get on YouTube, search for contacts and get social!
