Former Apprentice contestant Alex Epstein has had a lot of negative press coverage recently for an e-mail blunder he committed whilst trying to sell his services to a range of PR and communications agencies.
Epstien e-mailed 700 agencies, without blind copying the recipients or using any kind of e-mail marketing software. So, first off, the e-mail wasn't compliant with any e-mail marketing regulations but secondly, everyone who received it could see everyone else’s name and e-mail address.
The faux pas led to some negative press coverage and a host of satirical Twitter mentions. Poor old Alex; he was one of my favourites.
The lesson to be learnt is that when undertaking any kind of mass electronic marketing, including communicating with journalists en-masse as part of an engineering communications campaign, it’s wise to make sure you are certain of what you are doing. An unprofessional approach is likely to have a negative effect.
In the meantime, why not take a moment to consider Epstien’s greatest ever communications moment? He made TV history when he said, ‘I’m not just another corporate clone. I’m always thinking outside of the box. And you know what? If I was an apple pie, the apples inside would be orange.’
