There are plenty of good reasons for a technical or engineering company to set up a Blog. It could be as part of an engineering PR campaign, it could be as a way of answering technical queries from your customers or it could be as a way of producing a basic newsletter, using Feedburner.

But, no matter your reason for establishing the Blog, you will be faced with a fundamental question straight away; should you use a customised domain or not?

For those still in the dark, a customised domain is a regular Web domain, used to host a Blog. It looks like this: or for example

A non-customised domain is one with a .blogspot .typepad or .wordpress suffix, e.g. As you can see, with this Blog, I opted for a non-customised domain.

One argument is that a custom domain presents a more professional face to the world. I would counter this by arguing that your readers know the difference between a Blog and a Web site, so why pretend that a Blog is anything other than what it is?

Another pro in favour of using non-customised domains if that they are free, never have to be renewed and come hand in hand with free hosting. Having said that, the cost of a domain name pales into insignificance next to your weekly coffee budget, so this may not be your biggest consideration!

However, the big pro of a customised domain is that the page rank belongs to you, not Blogger, (or Wordpress etc). As a result, you can move between hosts without losing your page rank.

But remember, if you have an established Blog with lots of inbound links and a good page rank don't switch to a custom domain. If you do, the inbound links will cease to work and your page rank will revert to 0/10.
