Those of you who haven’t been living as hermits for the last month will know that Facebook overtook Google as the most visited site on the Internet for a week in January. But what are the other most visited sites on the Internet, by category?

This brilliant tool, built by the BBC, allows you to visualise exactly this. It’s an interactive treemap and the data used to generate it was collected by Nielsen and covers the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, the US and Australia. The figures represent unique users for the month of January 2010.

It’s fascinating to see that all of the Web sites hosted in Germany when added together get the same amount of unique users as Twitter. Meanwhile all of those hosted in the UK get about the same number of visitors as Facebook. It’s a fascinating insight for anyone trying to build an online business in today’s economy. It’s clear where your market should be and it’s across the pond.

PS - You can also use this link to see how many Blog posts and Google searches have been made this morning and how many e-mails have been sent today. At the time of writing there had been over 225,000 Blog posts put online. I’d be interested to see how many of these were actually originated by Seth Godin ;-)
