They say the best things in life are free — but is this true? Followerwonk, the tool that many businesses use to grow their Twitter follower base will soon start charging users, but I think it’s worth the cost.

Followerwonk — yes, that is its real name — is a Twitter analytics tool that allows users to manage their follower growth and find out more about their followers.
The tool was previously owned by marketing analytics service provider Moz and was free to use. However, Marc Mims, one of Followerwonk’s original developers, recently formed a company and acquired the tool.
While Mims prepares Followerwonk to run on its own infrastructure, Moz continues to host the tool. Once this transition period ends, users will have to pay a subscription to use Followerwonk.
At Stone Junction, we find Followerwonk so beneficial for our clients’ social media marketing, that we will be paying to continue our use of the tool; and we think you should too.
Why is Followerwonk so useful?
There are many reasons why a large Twitter follower base is important for businesses. For example, it helps to increase brand awareness, improve relationships with customers and increase website traffic.
To increase your follower base on Twitter, you can follow accounts with keywords related to your business in their bio in the hope that they will follow you back. It’s also a good idea to follow accounts that like or retweet your tweets and that your competitors follow. Followerwonk makes this easy.
You can also use the tool to track your gain and loss of followers over a chosen period, compare your social graph to other Twitter users and analyse the tweets of others.
However, you must make sure you don’t follow more than 1000 accounts per day because Twitter will identify this as spam and lock you out of your account. Oops.
Another thing to remember is that each profile is allowed to follow 5000 accounts. Beyond this point, there are limits on the number of additional accounts you can follow, depending on your ratio of followers to following.
Therefore, it is essential to keep an eye on this ratio for all business Twitter accounts that you manage. The key is to make sure you have more followers than you are following. A good routine is to spend ten minutes a day following relevant accounts and once a week, unfollow accounts that do not follow you back.
Unfortunately, not all the best things in life are free. Followerwonk is an extremely useful marketing tool that I think is well worth paying for if you want greater web traffic and brand awareness. Simply follow these top tips and you can’t go wrong.
